Week of September 17th, 2018

Volunteering:  This school year, CPS is requiring that all parents who chaperone field trips, volunteer in the classroom, or even make a presentation to the class complete a new application.  The link is https://cpsparentu.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=319488&type=d.  Please complete the application process now so that you are cleared for future field trips and volunteer opportunities.

NWEA Testing –  This week students will take their beginning of the year NWEA test in reading and math.  We plan to test on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Math – This week students will finish working in Unit 1.  Our first math unit of the year is a review unit. Students should work on solidifying all of their addition and subtraction facts for quick retrieval.  We will plan on taking the Unit 1 assessment on Monday, September 24th. I will send a study packet home with students this week. Please complete the study packet with your student.

Language Arts – This week we will continue reading our first novel of the year, Zeely by Virginia Hamilton.  We will also continue learning strategies for finding “just right books” for our own independent reading.  Students will learn to identify main characters in a text and to identify the problem and solution in a text.  In writing students will finish writing about a special day with their family.  Students will also finish creating their own family trees in class.

Social StudiesThis week we will continue to create our classroom community, as we explore our family community.  Students will focus on expanding community to include their family and neighbors.

Science – This week students will continue working in our first unit of the year – solids and liquids.  This week students will begin observing the properties of solids.
