Week of September 10, 2018

Volunteering:  This school year, CPS is requiring that all parents who chaperone field trips, volunteer in the classroom, or even make a presentation to the class complete a new application.  The link is https://cpsparentu.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=319488&type=d.  Please complete the application process now so that you are cleared for future field trips and volunteer opportunities.

Snacks:  Each day at second recess students eat a healthy snack.  Please consider sending healthy snacks to school for your child to share with the class.  There are currently 26 students in our room. Healthy snack ideas include: raisins, goldfish, graham crackers, pretzels, popcorn, carrot sticks, apple slices (pre-sliced), crackers, sliced celery, cuties, etc.

Open House – This Thursday, September 13th is the Ray School Open House.  I will meet parents in my room from 4:30 – 5:30pm.  I look forward to seeing you Thursday!

Math – This week students will continue working in Unit 1.  Our first math unit of the year is a review unit. Students should work on solidifying all of their addition and subtraction facts for quick retrieval.  We will take a math quiz on Friday reviewing what we have covered in math so far.

Language Arts – This week we will begin our first novel of the year, Zeely by Virginia Hamilton.  We will also learn strategies for finding “just right books” for our own independent reading.  Our reading skill this week is predicting.  Students will practice making predictions, and supporting their predictions with evidence from the text.  In writing we will begin writing about a special day with our family. Students will also begin creating their own family trees in class.  Students will take a reading comprehension quiz on prediction and using evidence from the text on Friday.

Social StudiesThis week we will continue to create our classroom community, as we explore our family community.  Students will focus on learning our rules and procedures.

Science – This week students will begin our first unit of the year – solids and liquids.  This week students will begin observing the properties of solids.
