Week of April 30, 2018

Mural Painting – Second graders at Ray are painting a special mural.  All second graders will have a chance to work on the mural once.  We are painting on Fridays and we will be using permanent paint. So please send your students to school on Fridays with clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (or a smock).

Walk-a-Thon May 18th – Register your student for the walk-a-thon at rayschool.dojiggy.com and begin fundraising to be entered into weekly drawings for cool stuff – museum memberships, gift cards, sports tickets and more!  Every student who raises at least $50 gets a chance to sink a teacher in the dunk tank on the last day of school.

Save the Date!  Just Get Sleep Fundraiser on May 6th – On Sunday May 6th you will have the opportunity to buy a new mattress in the Ray lunchroom at up to 50% off retail, with 20% of every sale donated back to Ray. Take advantage of this great deal and support Ray at the same time – WIN WIN!

Math – This week we will begin Unit 9.   Students will learn about fractions, and review many concepts from this school year.  Students will continue their individualized small group math instruction and Mobymax. Students may work on their Mobymax at home as well as at school.

Language Arts – We will continue reading our final novel of the school year this week The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau.  This week students will review reference materials and characteristics of informational texts.  Students will continue to work with story structure in their writing. Finally, students will continue their individualized reading on Raz-Kids.com and Moby Max reading.

Social Studies – This week we will learn about Mexico through our Passports program.  We will also have a presentation on the US territory of Puerto Rico. This quarter I am asking parents to come into the classroom and share their experiences living, and visiting other countries.  If you would like to share a country you’ve been to with our class, please email me at mmwebb@cps.edu to schedule a time that is convenient for you and the class.

Science – Instructions for our insects project have been sent home.  Students will create their own “Save The Insects” brochure about the insect of their choice.  Projects are due on May 4th. In school, we will continue learning about our insects and plants.  Students will continue learning about the life cycle of insects this week.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me at mmwebb@cps.edu or call me at 773-535-0970.
