Week of February 12th, 2018

Earbuds for iPads- At the beginning of the school year, each student was given a pair of inexpensive earbuds to use when working on iPads.  At this point in the school year, most of the earbuds have stopped working.   Please ask your student if  their earbuds have broken.  If they have please send in a new pair which they can use for their work on the iPads.  


Math – This week we will continue working in Unit 6 which focuses on analyzing and organizing data.   Students will learn how to read bar graphs, picture graphs, collect data, and solve number stories. Students will continue learning how to subtract multi-digit numbers.  Students will also continue with their individualized small group math instruction and Mobymax.  Students may work on their Mobymax at home as well as at school.   


Language Arts – This week we will finish reading our novel The Hundred Dresses. On Monday students will take a reading test on the story Violet’s Music. We will continue working on story structure, focusing on how to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story. Students will also finish giving and listening to one another’s African American history projects.


Social StudiesThis week we will continue our African American history studies.  This week we will learn about the civil rights movement.  Students will also finish presenting their freedom quilt projects with the class.  In addition, we will combine all of the projects into two quilts.  Next week, we will have our annual black history month gallery walk through and our classroom quilts will be on display.  


Science – This week students will begin our Earth’s Systems unit, All About Earth: Landforms and Changes. I will introduce what Earth is made of, landforms, weathering and erosion. We will focus on how wind and water change the shape of land. Students will complete a cookie experiment, investigating how wind and water change the shape of land. Lastly, they will observe and identify fast versus slow changes made to land by wind and water.
